The 10 best After Effects extensions in 2026 (ranked)
By CaptureFlex · Updated 28 October 2026
An extension adds the tools Adobe never shipped: a faster way to ease keys, a toolbar of your own, a character rig, a bridge from Illustrator. The right two or three save hours every week. The wrong ten just crowd your workspace.
Below are the ten we would point a motion designer to today, what each one is best at, what it costs, and when to pick something else instead.
Full disclosure: we make Flex GUI Pro, so it is number one here, and we explain exactly why. The other nine are tools we genuinely recommend. Prices were checked on each maker's own page on 28 October 2026.

How we picked
- You can still get it from its maker today.
- It saves time on something you do every day, not once a year.
- Its price is clear, straight from the maker: free, one-time or subscription.
- Each one is best at something different, so the list covers easing, toolbars, rigging, design hand-off and presets instead of ten versions of the same thing.
1. Flex GUI Pro
Best all-in-one panel. By CaptureFlex · $3 one-time (₹300 in India). One dockable panel instead of a shelf of single-purpose scripts: 1,900+ controls in 151 tool groups. It covers the everyday moves (nine-point anchor pad, align, true comp duplicate), Graph Editor 2.0 with 6 curve models and 44 built-in curves, AI AutoCaptions that run Whisper on your own machine, animated map rigs, 63 one-click UI templates, colour tools, and a Dynamic FX Manager that switches heavy effects off while you animate and back on before you render.
- Pick it if: You want one panel for most of your daily work, and no subscription.
- Worth knowing: It does a lot, so there is more to learn than with a single-purpose script. For character rigging with IK, Duik is still the tool; for live Illustrator and Figma hand-off, Overlord.
- See Flex GUI Pro
2. FX Console
Best free effect search. By Video Copilot · Free. A search bar for effects. Press the shortcut, type a few letters of an effect name and press Enter to apply it, instead of digging through the Effects menu. Windows and Mac.
- Pick it if: You apply effects all day and want the quickest free win.
- Worth knowing: It is an older plugin that rarely gets updates, so check that it runs on your version of After Effects.
- FX Console on the maker's site
3. KBar 3
Best custom toolbar. By KraftyFX · $39.99 one-time, free trial. Build your own toolbars. A button can apply an effect or preset, run a menu command, an expression, a script or even a shell command, with your own icons or text labels. Up to 4 toolbars, keyboard modifiers for extra actions per button, and toolbars you can share with a team.
- Pick it if: You already own a few scripts and want all of them one click away.
- Worth knowing: KBar launches tools rather than adding new ones, so it pays off once you have a collection to put on it.
- KBar 3 on the maker's site
4. Motion Studio
Best subscription toolkit. By Mt. Mograph · $13 a month, or $11 a month billed yearly ($132); 7-day free trial. The successor to Motion 4: a large toolkit (80+ tools by the maker's count) with one-click anchor snapping, an easing page with speed and influence graphs, colour controls, Focus for isolating layers, Re-Key for saving and re-applying keyframes, and Emitter for particle assets.
- Pick it if: You want a long-running, polished toolkit with monthly updates and do not mind a subscription.
- Worth knowing: It is subscription-only since 2024. Old Motion 2, 3 and 4 licenses keep working, but only for those versions.
- Motion Studio on the maker's site
5. Overlord
Best for Illustrator, Photoshop and Figma. By Battle Axe · $75 one-time, 1 year of updates included. Sends layers from Illustrator, Photoshop and Figma straight into After Effects as editable shape and text layers, gradients included, and can move designs back the other way. One license covers 2 computers.
- Pick it if: You design in Illustrator or Figma and animate in After Effects.
- Worth knowing: It is a hand-off tool, not an animation toolkit. It keeps working if you do not renew, but features released after the first year need a renewal.
- Overlord on the maker's site
6. Flow
Best dedicated easing editor. By Zack Lovatt and renderTom · $35 one-time, free trial. A clean curve editor for keyframe easing: shape the curve, press Apply. Save curves as presets in your own libraries, share them, copy cubic-bezier values, apply curves as expressions, or export the library to KBar. It ships with 25 common curves.
- Pick it if: Easing is the one thing you want to fix.
- Worth knowing: It only does easing. Flex GUI Pro's Graph Editor 2.0 does the same job inside a bigger panel, so you will not need both.
- Flow on the maker's site
7. Ease and Wizz
Best pay-what-you-want easing. By Ian Haigh · Name your own price ($24.99 suggested; businesses pay the suggested price). Robert Penner's classic easing equations (expo, back, elastic, bounce and more) applied as expressions from a dockable palette. Because the ease is an expression, you can still drag keyframes around and the ease follows.
- Pick it if: You want elastic and bounce eases on any property for whatever you can afford.
- Worth knowing: The ease lives in an expression rather than in the keyframes, which some teams prefer to avoid in shared projects.
- Ease and Wizz on the maker's site
8. Duik Ángela
Best for character rigging. By RxLaboratorio · Free and open source (GPL-3); donations welcome. The standard rigging and animation toolkit for After Effects: IK rigs and controllers for characters, props and cameras, plus automations such as wiggle, spring, bounce, wheel, swing, blink and walk cycles.
- Pick it if: You animate characters.
- Worth knowing: There is a lot to learn. The free tutorials help, and the 395-page user guide is sold separately.
- Duik Ángela on the maker's site
9. Animation Composer
Best preset library. By Mister Horse · Free plan; paid plans $19.90 a month or $198 a year. A drag-and-drop library of motion presets, text animations, transitions, shapes and sound effects for After Effects and Premiere Pro, plus small tools such as Keyframe Wingman and Anchor Point Mover. The free plan has over 1,000 assets; paid plans have over 6,000.
- Pick it if: You want ready-made animation to drop in. Start with the free plan.
- Worth knowing: Most of the library is on the paid plans, which are subscriptions.
- Animation Composer on the maker's site
10. Explode Shape Layers 3
Best for shape layers. By Zack Lovatt · $29.99 one-time, free trial. Splits a shape layer into one layer per shape, merges shape layers back together, converts Illustrator layers to shapes, removes the empty artboard that conversion leaves behind, and selects every fill or stroke in a click.
- Pick it if: You bring a lot of Illustrator art into After Effects.
- Worth knowing: It does one job. If you want the whole Illustrator round trip, Overlord does more.
- Explode Shape Layers 3 on the maker's site
Five habits that speed up After Effects more than any extension
- Reveal only what you need: Select a layer and press U to see just its animated properties; P, S, R, T and A open position, scale, rotation, opacity and anchor point on their own.
- Preview at lower resolution: Set the comp viewer to Half or Quarter while you animate and switch back to Full for the final check.
- Turn heavy effects off while you animate: Glows, blurs and motion blur plugins slow every preview. Switch their fx toggles off while you work and back on before you render (Flex GUI Pro's Dynamic FX Manager does this for the whole timeline in one click).
- Give the disk cache a fast drive: In Preferences > Media & Disk Cache, point the disk cache at a fast SSD, and use Edit > Purge > All Memory & Disk Cache when previews start acting strangely.
- Keep the project lean: File > Dependencies > Remove Unused Footage clears what you no longer use, so projects open, save and collect faster.
The short version
If you only add one thing this week, make it the tool that fixes your slowest daily task. If that is a bit of everything, start with Flex GUI Pro.
Questions, answered.
What is the best After Effects extension?
It depends on what slows you down. For one panel that covers easing, captions, maps, templates and clean-up, we would pick Flex GUI Pro (we make it). For a free quick win, FX Console. For character animation, Duik Ángela. For Illustrator or Figma hand-off, Overlord.
What is the difference between an After Effects extension, a script and a plugin?
A script (.jsx or .jsxbin) automates After Effects and runs from File > Scripts or as a dockable ScriptUI panel. An extension is a panel built with HTML and JavaScript, usually installed from a .zxp file and opened from Window > Extensions. A plugin (.aex on Windows, .plugin on Mac) is compiled code, most often an effect in the Effects menu. Flex GUI Pro, KBar and Flow are extensions; FX Console is a plugin.
How do I install an After Effects extension?
Most come as a .zxp file: install it with the maker's installer or a ZXP installer, restart After Effects and open it from Window > Extensions. Scripts go in the Scripts or ScriptUI Panels folder instead. Flex GUI Pro installs with the Flex Product Manager, which includes the Windows and macOS builds.
Are free After Effects extensions any good?
Yes. FX Console and Duik Ángela are free and used every day by professionals, and Animation Composer has a useful free plan. Paid tools earn their price by covering more ground or getting regular updates.
How many extensions do I need?
Usually two or three: one broad toolkit, plus a specialist tool for what you do most, such as characters, Illustrator hand-off or presets. More panels than that mostly crowd your workspace.
Is Flex GUI Pro a subscription?
No. It is $3 once (₹300 in India) for a permanent license key, and it runs on After Effects 2022 and newer on Windows and macOS.
